Phil Dowd's Carlin Cup Final Performance

Postby Chelsea Dagger on 01 Mar 2010, 11:42

In terms of decision making, he had an excellent game. Didn't bottle the penalty decision and got most free kicks right as well as applying the advantage rule well. Not sending off Vidic was a very odd decision and too not even book his was just wrong. He then books Collins & Downing, warns Raphael and lets Carrick off scott free for a blatant yellow card challenge. Mixed day for Dowd, I can only assume that because it was a cup final he was leniant on Vidic but there isn't a rule for cup finals although this goes on at every level. I've seen full on brawls in Sunday League cup finals and the ref just breaks it up and tells everyone to calm down. :dunno: Good game though.

A good refereeing performance is one that does not effect the outcome of the game.

Therefore Dowd had a shit match.

Imo Vidic should have been sent off ...but i guess we got a break for once.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"GRAHAM POLL: Time for the experts to learn the law... Nemanja Vidic deserved to escape red card at Wembley"
Opinions are vital for good debate but the facts need to be stated correctly.
But that is not the point in law, which states that the player must be heading towards goal when he is fouled. This point was finally offered by Southgate but that was quickly passed over.
In this case the analysts could have quoted all of the law, noting that there is no mention of any 'last man', and conclude that Vidic should have been sent off as it was only his presence that resulted in Agbonlahor heading away from goal – after all football is a game of opinions.
But to quote law incorrectly for me is inexcusable. They should be informing and educating the public but to do so they need to know law themselves and along with current players, the experts analysing the game just don't feel it necessary to learn and understand the laws of the game they claim to love.
Poll is talking bollocks as usual. If a player goes around the GK he is technically heading away from goal but it's still a red if the GK catches him.
No they aren't Poll is mis-interpreting them to back up Dowd. The rules haven't changed, the wording should be changed but you could say that about a lot of the current rules.
Is 'heading at goal' in the rule or an interiptation?
I always thought it was still 'denying a clear goal scoring opportunity'.
It is in the rule and the rule hasn't been changed in years. Poll is just greying the issue now and there are enough grey rules in football without that fat spanner chipping in with more. Fat waste of space Hacket should have been sorting this out over the last few years but I doubt he can drag himself away from all the free lunches he gets to speak to FIFA.
